Suzuki's small SX4 SUV developed with Fiat debuts in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Suzuki Motor Corp. Toyota, Daihatsu launch jointly developed compact car

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. and affiliate Daihatsu Motor Co. on June 7 launched a new compact car model (photo) produced through the first joint development project for the Japanese market between the two companies. Toyota's dealerships across Japan are selling the car as the Passo and Daihatsu's are selling it as the Boon. The lineup of the new model features 1.0-liter and 1.3-liter engines, with prices set between 945,000 yen and 1,302,000 yen.

TOKYO, Japan - Mazda Motor Corp. said June 25 it will discontinue its Familia compact car (photo) this fall and launch an all-new model under the name of ''Axela'' in Japan and ''Mazda3'' overseas. The vehicle will go on sale concurrently in Japan, Europe and the U.S. this fall, and will be introduced into other key markets during the fourth quarter of 2003 and into the first quarter of 2004.

TOKYO, Japan - Mazda Motor Corp. said June 25 it will launch an all-new model under the name of ''Axela'' (photo) in Japan and ''Mazda3'' overseas. The vehicle, which will replace the Familia compact car, will go on sale concurrently in Japan, Europe and the U.S. this fall, and will be introduced into other key markets during the fourth quarter of 2003 and into the first quarter of 2004.

TOKYO, Japan - Nissan Motor Co. on Oct. 8 launches its redesigned Cube compact car, the first fully redesigned model since its debut in 1998. The new Cube, available in a 1400-cc engine model, comes in eight colors and offers more interior space and numerous convenient storage features. It will be sold for a suggested retail price ranging from 1,198,000 yen to 1,622,000 yen.

Daihatsu Motor's new Tanto

On April 9, Daihatsu announced the launch of the fully remodeled Tanto (photo), a tall minicar, the fourth generation since the first generation Tanto was launched in 2003. Based on DNGA, a new development platform for minicars and compact cars, the vehicle's chassis and powertrain have been completely redesigned to improve basic performance such as handling stability and flat ride comfort. The price including consumption tax ranges from 1,224,400 to 1,873,800 yen. The sales target is 12,500 units per month. At a press conference held in Tokyo on the same day, President Soichiro Okudaira expressed his confidence in the new model, saying, "Basic performance such as handling stability and quietness have been raised to a very high level, raising the car's status one or two notches. Inside the vehicle, the driver's seat slides backward 54cm to create a passageway to the rear seat, and the sliding door automatically opens and closes to make it easier to get in and out from the sidewalk.
