Copernicus Sentinel-1D Launches Into Orbit - French Guiana

Handout photo dated on November 4, 2025 shows Copernicus Sentinel-1D was successfully launched on 4 November 2025 at 22:02 CET (21:02 UTC) aboard an Ariane 6 rocket from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The satellite was released into orbit 34 minutes after launch, and the first signal was received at 23:22 CET by the Troll ground station in Antarctica. At the heart of Copernicus Sentinel-1 is the C-SAR (C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) instrument, operating at 5.405 GHz. It provides high-resolution imaging of the Earth's surface regardless of weather conditions, day or night. The radar supports four operational modes: Strip Map (5 × 5 m resolution, 80 km swath), Interferometric Wide Swath (5 × 20 m resolution, 250 km swath), Extra Wide Swath (20 × 40 m resolution, 400 km swath), and Wave mode for ocean monitoring. A key feature of Sentinel-1D, also present on Sentinel-1C, is the integration of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which enables detection and tracking of ship signals in c

Cave On The Moon Could Be A Future Base

Hand out photo shows the Mare Tranquillitatis pit as seen by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Radar data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter have revealed what they think may be the deepest known cave on the moon, with a "skylight" entrance 330 feet (100 meters) wide. The cave, which could potentially be a location for a future moon base, is in Mare Tranquillitatis—Latin for Sea of Tranquility—close to the landing spot of Apollo 11, the first mission to land people on the moon 55 years ago this week. Researchers at the University of Trento in Italy have revealed more about Mare Tranquillitatis Pit in a paper published on Monday July 15, 2024 in Nature Astronomy. It is one of about 200 on the moon. A pit is an opening on the lunar surface that could be an entrance to a cave or lava tube. The latter forms when underground rivers of lava empty out. Pits are believed to form when parts of a lava tube's ceiling collapse, and those that directly expose the interior are called skylights. About 16 of the 200

(220416) -- LUOYANG, April 16, 2022 (Xinhua) -- Aerial photo taken on April 13, 2022 shows staff members examining a Buddha statue at the Fengxian Temple of Longmen Grottoes during a restoration project in Luoyang, central China's Henan Province. A restoration project is now underway at the Fengxian Temple, the largest cave of Longmen Grottoes. Water seepage and perilous rock bases are the two factors that threaten the existence of cultural relics in the grottoes. New technologies have been adopted in the restoration, such as ground penetrating radar detection and protective nets design. This has been the first large-scale restoration project of the temple since 1970s. The restoration started in December 2021 and has so far completed about 70 percent. The whole project is expected to finish in June this year. (Xinhua/Li An)
