Students from disaster-hit region give concert

NEW YORK, United States - About 70 students from Japan's northeastern region hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami give a concert in New York on March 22, 2013, to express their gratitude for support in rebuilding the region. The students from five high schools in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures sang Verdi's "Requiem" together with a choir of around 100 singers from New Jersey at Lincoln Center.

Only 6 of 82 quake-hit schools restored in Iwate, Miyagi

SENDAI, Japan - Kesennuma Koyo High School in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, is still damaged on Aug. 28, 2011, more than five months after the March quake and tsunami. The local education board said on Aug. 31, 2011, rebuilding is complete or will soon be finished for only six out of a total of 82 public schools in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, which were severely damaged by the disaster.

OSAKA, Japan - A security guard stands in front of the gate of the state-run Ikeda Elementary School in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, on June 11. A total of five security guards were posted at the four gates of the school compound, where the Ikeda junior and senior high schools are also located. Eight elementary school children were stabbed to death and 15 others were wounded on June 8 when a man stormed into the school, attached to the state-run Osaka Kyoiku University, and attacked them with a kitchen knife.

MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Photo shows pupils at Ako Elementary School in the village of Miyake on Miyakejima Island, whose classes resume July 3, along with five other elementary and junior high schools after seven days of temporary closure caused by the threat of a volcanic eruption on the island. Life on Miyakejima, a small volcanic island 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, is gradually returning to normal.
