Air Pollution - Tehran

Air Pollution - Tehran

A flagpole is barely visible as thick smog and dust particles envelop the city and its buildings in Tehran, Iran, on November 24, 2025. Although Monday (November 24) was a public holiday in Iran, the pollution lingered, and the air pollution index in Tehran remained at the red level, classified as "dangerous for all members of society," which led to restrictive traffic measures and the closure of schools, universities, and offices for the following two days. Australian occupation of Nauru, South Pacific, WW1

The Australian occupation of Nauru (also known as Pleasant Island), a small island in the South Pacific, during the First World War. The island was previously part of German New Guinea, until Australian naval forces removed its German officials on 4 August 1914. Australian occupation began on 7 September 1914, and the island became part of British Western Pacific Territories, administered by Australia. It was briefly occupied by Japan during the Second World War, but then returned to British control. The island eventually became independent in 1968, as the Republic of Nauru. In this photo, troops, European residents and natives gather to witness the hoisting of the Union Jack. Date: 7 November 1914

A garden

A garden

The low stone lantern indicates that this is the compound of Yasukuni Shinto Shrine at Kudan. The torii in the centre is the wooden Otorii (Great Gate) built in 1873. It fell into ruin, was removed in 1884, and was replaced with a bronze gate in 1887. There is a flagpole to the left of the gate. The fenced-in area in the foreground seems to be a pond. Probably taken between 1873 and 1875.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number90‐23‐0]
