Toyota launches pickup plant in Thailand

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said on Aug. 25 it has begun producing and selling a new pickup truck in Thailand, the first step in the automaker's plan to build a global supply network. The new pickup, the Hilux VIGO (photo), is the first of five newly developed models to be produced in four countries -- Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa and Argentina -- in an investment worth about 150 billion yen. The five models -- three pickup trucks, a minivan and a sport-utility vehicle -- will be sold in more than 140 countries outside Japan and North America.

Sony to release new DVD recorders with high-capacity HDD

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Sept. 8 it will release four new models of its DVD player/recorders from Oct. 21, two of which are equipped with high-capacity hard-disk drives (HDD). NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. will introduce the new Avensis (photo), a strategic car model developed for the European market, in Japan this fall, the company said on March 4. Launched in Britain on March 1, the new Avensis is set to be released in other European countries this spring. Mazda puts new Mazda Atenza midsize car on market

TOKYO, Japan - Mazda Motor Corp. on May 20 introduced to the market a new midsize car, the Mazda Atenza, featuring low fuel consumption and emissions. The Mazda Atenza went on sale in two models -- a five-door ''SPORT'' model, which is priced between 2 million yen and 2.3 million yen, and a four-door ''SEDAN'' model priced between 1.8 million yen and 2.36 million yen. The new model is available with a newly developed 2300-cc four-cylinder DOHC engine or a newly developed 2000-cc four-cylinder engine.
