The loco leads a four-car train, the Komako, which is named after a geisha heroine in ''Yukiguni'' (Snow Country), authored by Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972). The train, whose operation marks the 100th anniversary of Kawabata's birth, shuttles between Yuzawa and Minakami in neighboring Gunma Prefecture.
