Secom unveils security robot to scare away intruders

TOKYO, Japan - Security service provider Secom Co. on July 22 unveiled a security robot (L) that can run as fast as humans and scare away intruders by spraying white smoke. The Secom Robot X is designed for use at spacious places such as airports and factories and will be leased for 300,000 yen per month, starting next fiscal year, Secom said. The four-wheeled robot is about one meter long and high and weighs 120 kilograms.

Daihatsu to double output of commodity engines

RYUO, Japan - Daihatsu Motor Co. said June 18 it plans to turn out some 30,000 commodity engines at its newly built plant (in photo) in Ryuo, Shiga Prefecture, in fiscal 2005, double the automaker's output in fiscal 2002. The plan reflects brisk sales of lawn mowers and multi-purpose four-wheeled vehicles equipped with the engines in the United States.

The four-wheeled, electric vehicle, dubbed the Intelligent City Walker (ICW), is equipped with various IT features, such as infrared and ultrasonic sensors, which allow it to receive traffic information from cameras fixed to electric poles and other sites and then automatically avoid barriers. InfoCom will continue studies in a bid to make the whole ICW system available for less than 500,000 yen by 2005.
