Female athletes make rare appearance in archery contest in Yemen's capital

STORY: Female athletes make rare appearance in archery contest in Yemen's capital DATELINE: March 1, 2023 LENGTH: 00:01:33 LOCATION: Sanaa CATEGORY: SPORTS SHOTLIST: 1. various of the contest STORYLINE: A local archery championship was held on Monday in Yemen's capital Sanaa. A total of 75 male and female athletes played in the game despite the country's conservative tradition that frowns upon females' participation in sports competitions. A female archer said she felt lucky to get into the games and hoped for more to come. While women's sports are rarely held in Yemen, sportswomen have made continuous efforts to participate in local and international tournaments. Such competitions have been unusual in the war-torn country. Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia seized control of several northern provinces and forced the Saudi-backed Yemeni government out of the capital Sanaa.
