Bombardment of Kagoshima

Bombardment of Kagoshima

Following the breakdown of negotiations to seek recompense for the Namamugi Incident in September 1862, and having been surprised by cannon fire from the shore, ships of the British Royal Navy bombard the Japanese town of Kagoshima. The ships involved were HMS Euryalus; HMS Pearl; HMS Coquette; HMS Argus; HMS Perseus; HMS Racehorse and the gunboat HMS Havoc. The clash resulted in more British than Japanese casualties, the town having been evacuated, and the British stopped short of landing troops. The incident became known as the Anglo-Satsuma War. Date: 15 - 17 August 1863

East Japan's 2011 disaster reminds old woman of WWII experience

East Japan's 2011 disaster reminds old woman of WWII experience

Otoko Wada talks about her wartime experience in front of what used to be a bomb shelter in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, as seen in this photo taken on Jan. 29, 2015, where she joined other escapees from U.S. gunboat attacks in the closing days of World War II. The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that hit Iwate and other parts of the northeastern Japan region reminded the 85-year-old woman of the fears she experienced during the war. File photo taken Feb. 27, 2011, shows the Hanayashiki amusement park in Asakusa, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tokyo, with Tokyo Skytree under construction in the background. Hanayashiki, known as Japan's first amusement park, originally opened as a flower park in 1853 when Commodore Matthew C. Perry of the U.S. Navy visited Japan in the late Edo era with his "black ships" to open Japanese ports to American trade under gunboat diplomacy. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo
