170 kg halibut auctioned at Sapporo wholesale market

SAPPORO, Japan - A huge halibut, 2.4 meters long and weighing 170 kilograms, is auctioned April 11 at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The fish, caught April 10 off Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, was sold for 119,000 yen. Photo provided by Sapporo Chuo Suisan company.

Fukushima prefectural government officials release young spotted halibut into a river in Soma in the northeastern Japanese prefecture on May 26, 2015. Although shipments of the upscale fish have been restricted due to effects of the nuclear accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011, hopes are mounting that fishing of the spotted halibut will be resumed soon as significant amounts of radioactive substances have not been detected.
