THE FREEDOM ROUTE IS A 1,142 KILOMETER ROUTE WHICH COMMEMORATES THE VICTORY OF THE ALLIES AND THE LIBERATION OF FRANCE, BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IT IS MATERIALIZED BY A SERIES OF KILOMETER MARKERS ALONG THE ROAD NETWORK BETWEEN UTAH BEACH (AND SAINTE-MERE-EGLISE FOR TERMINAL 0) AND BASTOGNE IN THE BELGIAN PROVINCE OF LUXEMBOURG, MARKING THE ROUTE FOLLOWED BY THE 3RD AMERICAN ARMY COMMANDED BY GENERAL PATTON. ON JUNE 6, 1944, IN NORMANDY, AMERICAN FORCES LANDED ON UTAH BEACH, 2.5 KILOMETERS FURTHER SOUTH THAN PLANNED. THIS NAVIGATION ERROR WAS BENEFICIAL, IT PUT THE AMERICAN TROOPS OUT OF RANGE OF THE POWERFUL COASTAL BATTERIES OF CRISBECQ-SAINT-MARCOUF AND AZEVILLE.
