Apple pollination using Toko Ironworks' drone

Apple pollination using Toko Ironworks' drone

Toko Ironworks (Odate City, Akita Prefecture) has begun marketing apple pollination work using flying robots (drones) to fruit farmers. Apple trees are tall and bear a large number of fruit, making pollination work hard work. The drone will make the work easier and shorten the working hours. A demonstration experiment is being conducted in collaboration with Aomori Prefectural Nagui Agricultural High School, and Yoaki Torigata, director of the company, says, "We are on the verge of solving the main problem," and plans to market the system, including rental. In the demonstration experiment so far, a fruiting rate of 40-50% was obtained when the drone was used. A solution of pollen mixed with distilled water, sugar, and safflower pigment is placed in a tank, and a drone is flown near the flowers to spray them. The downwash airflow caused by the drone's propeller atomizes the solution and applies it evenly. Photo taken on August 20, 2019,credit: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun / Kyodo News Images

CNC Turning Center Installed by Tobata Ironworks

Tobata Ironworks (Kokura Minami-ku, Kitakyushu City) has introduced a large computer numerical control (CNC) turning center with a table diameter of 4,000 mm. The company had been using separate machines for turning and drilling, but as the workpieces have become larger and the time required for moving and processing them has increased, the company has decided to use a single machine to improve efficiency. Recently, the company has also been focusing on machining, and President Yasuda said, "There are few casting manufacturers that have such large machining equipment. We expect to differentiate ourselves from the competition and increase added value by reducing man-hours. A turning center is a numerically controlled (NC) machine tool that is a combination of a lathe. A turning center is a numerically controlled (NC) machine tool that is a combination of a lathe. MM Catalyst, an auxiliary catalyst device developed by Haiba Iron Works in collaboration with Nichidai Filter

Haiba Iron Works (Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture), in cooperation with Nichidai Filter (Ujitawara Town, Kyoto Prefecture), a stainless steel diffusion bonding (sintering) company, has developed an auxiliary catalytic converter "MM catalyst" that shortens the activation time of the main catalyst for exhaust gas purification by about 40%. The MM catalyst is manufactured by loading precious metals onto a structure made of sintered stainless steel wire mesh. Compared to the honeycomb structure that is commonly used in catalysts, the reaction space is more complex and the contact efficiency of exhaust gas is improved. Noboru Ishizawa, director of the technology department at Haiba Iron Works, said, "We will further refine our technology through repeated tests using actual machines (for practical use).
