Kabul Kangana Grape Storage - Afghanistan

Kabul Kangana Grape Storage - Afghanistan

A villager uses finished Kangana jars as molds to shape bowls for new ones in the northern outskirts of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, Aug. 25, 2025. The Kangana, an ancient clay jar to preserve grapes, has been widely used in the rural outskirts north of Kabul. This century-old Afghan container enables grapes harvested in the heat of summer to stay fresh until the following spring. A Kangana is an ellipsoid formed by placing two bowl-shaped compoents face to face, with no apparent front or back side. Once sealed with mud around its brim, the jar becomes nearly airtight, functioning as a natural "vacuum storage container." In some Afghan villages, the Kangana was once used to store peppers and apples as well. Today, with these vegetables and fruits available year-round, grapes remain as the main object in its starage. Rungis International Market - Southern Paris

This photograph shows a jars of foie gras at the volatile's pavilion of the Rungis International Market, southern suburb of Paris on December 6, 2023. The Rungis International Market (Marche International de Rungis) is the principal market of Paris, mainly for food and horticultural products, located in the commune of Rungis, in the southern suburbs. It is the second largest wholesale food market in the world after Central de Abasto, located in Mexico city. From its origins in the 10th century to the mid-20th century, the central market of Paris was located in the centre of the city, in a 10-hectare area named Les Halles. That became too small to accommodate all of the business demand, and, in 1969, the market was transferred to the suburbs. Rungis was selected because of its easy access by rail and highway and its proximity to Orly International Airport. Photo by Eliot Blondet/ABACAPRESS.COM
