The Dutch Lantern,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

This photograph contains the octagonal revolving lantern given to Japan by the Dutch Republic. It is visible on the right, in front of the Yomeimon Gate of the Nikko Toshogu Shinto Shrine. A lotus lantern is standing in the centre back. The building on the left is the Bell Tower. The Sanjinko (three sacred stonehouses) and Nino-torii Gate,Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

Kamijinko, built in azekurazukuri (wedge-log) style and visible on the right, stores the costumes and other accessories used in the 1,000 Samurai Procession Festival. The building on the left is the Omizuya (washing place) donated by the Nabeshima Clan. To the right of it stands the Karagane Torii, the first bronze gate in Japan built by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Kamijinko (sacred storehouse),Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

The Shimojinko, built in wedge-log style, is the first building visible to the right after Omotemon (Niomon) at Nikko Toshogu. Shimojinko is one of three storage buildings, along with Kamijinko and Nakajinko. Pricincts of nikko toshogu shrine

Climbing up the stone steps, visitors arrive in the compounds of the Yomei Gate. To the left is the drum tower, and by that is the hanging lantern and turning lantern donated by the Netherlands. The left corner is the Gyosuisha, and next to it is the bronze torii, Rinzo ( storage for scriptures), and the Kami Jinko (warehouse). The Kami Jinko is done in Azekura style, and the end has a statue of two elephants, one white and the other black, their rough drafts drawn by Kano Tanyu.Costumes of a procession of a thousand warriors in the spring and autumn are stored in the three Jinko (Kami, Naka and Shimo). Three sacred storehouses of nikko toshogu shrine

To the right is the Yomei Gate, and the left is the kamijinko (treasure storage of a shrine). The kamijinko is built in Azekura style (store house built of square logs) , inlaid with carvings of a white and black elephant based on a draft by Kano Tanyu at the end of the eaves. To the right of the steps are steel lanterns dedicated by Date Masamune, and stone garden lanterns dedicated by other lords.
