JAXA successfully deploys antennas on satellite

TOKYO, Japan - The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency successfully deployed both antennas on Japan's biggest satellite Kiku No. 8 on Dec. 26, a day after one of them failed to unfold properly. The antennas, the two honeycomb-shaped panels measuring 17 meters by 19 meters shown on this illustrated file photo, are used to receive and transmit signals. Kiku (chrysanthemum) dolls were made with the theme of popular Kyogen, or involved plays or stories, and were made in the shape of popular actors. Kiku ningyo (chrysanthemum dolls) are said to originate from the Edo Era, but details are unknown. They were once a famous seasonal tiding of autumn in Edo, but after 1887 they lost popularity.
