OSHAMAMBE, Japan - Carp streamers donated from across the nation are hung May 4 over a shelter in the town of Oshamambe near the 732-meter Mt. Usu volcano in southwestern Hokkaido, which has been spewing ash, steam and smoke since erupting March 31 for the first time in nearly 23 years. Carp streamers, called ''koinobori'' in Japanese, are flown outside houses on May 5 to celebrate male children and as an expression of hope for their health and prosperity.

Some 100 carp streamers, koinobori in Japanese, swim beautifully in the air over a river at Watarase valley, Gunma Prefecture, on April 8 amid cherry blossoms that are almost in full bloom. Children's Day in Japan, held on May 5th. A time for families to celebrate the joy of a child, a tradition celebrated since ancient times. May 5th was traditionally a boy's holiday known as Tango no Sekku, when boys would fly carp-shaped flags and streamers, called koinobori (as depicted on this card). The family flies one carp flag for each son. The eldest son gets the largest flag and the youngest gets the smallest. There is also a black carp flag for the father and a red carp flag for the mother. Date: circa 1910s
