Sharp, Sony devise new MO disk

OSAKA, Japan - A handout photo shows a new magneto-optical (MO) disk jointly developed by Sharp Corp. and Sony Corp. The new disk, 0.5 millimeter thick and 5 centimeters in diameter, is smaller than a mini disk (MD) but can store 1 gigabyte of information when a red laser is used, seven times the storage capacity of MDs, the two companies said. Sharp said March 23 it plans to release a digital video camera using the new disk by spring 2001.

The companies said July 27 the system is the world's smallest rewritable optical disk, with a thickness of 0.6 millimeter.
