"Hiroshima Maiden" Yamaoka dies

TOKYO, Japan - File photo taken in the city of Hiroshima in October 2004 shows Michiko Yamaoka speaking about her experience of the 1945 atomic bombing to elementary school students visiting the city on a school trip. Yamaoka, one of the "Hiroshima Maidens" who underwent reconstructive surgery for facial burns in the United States from 1955, died of pneumonia on Feb. 2, 2013, at a Hiroshima nursing facility for the elderly. She was 82.

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Heritage Committee decided July 1 in Suzhou, China, to include in its heritage list the holy grounds and pilgrimage path in the Kii mountains straddling central and western Japan. The shrine is located in the heritage district.
