Bean-throwing in train ahead of annual festival

OSAKA, Japan - Keihan Electric Railway Co.'s image character "Okeihan" (L) and a Buddhist monk (R) from a temple, Naritasan Osaka Betsuin Myooin, surprise passengers on a Keihan express train by throwing fortune beans on Jan. 31, 2014. The "mamemaki" bean throwing ritual is celebrated annually in Japan in early February to drive away evil spirits.

New ozeki Chiyotaikai joins bean-throwing

Chiyotaikai, newly promoted to ozeki after capturing his first Emperor's Cup in the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, joins in an annual bean-throwing ceremony Wednesday Feb. 3 at Shinshoji temple in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, to wish for good luck and good health throughout the year. The bean-throwing rite, or ''mamemaki'' in Japanese, is observed each year on either Feb. 3 or 4 at temples and shrines across the country.
