Sensoji Temple

This Kannon-do was rebuilt by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649. The style of construction is koran mitesaki-zukuri. The photograph captures a flock of pigeons flying from Niomon (gate). The building burned down in an air raid on March 10, 1945. The present-day Kannon-do was erected on October 17, 1958. Taken by Herbert George Ponting. Inside of main gate of chion-in temple

In the tower of the Sanmon at Chion-in Temple. The mirrored ceiling has coloured illustrations of angels and Kalavinka (an imaginary bird referred to in Buddhist sutras). Mitesaki tokyo (entablature in square frames) can be seen between the ceiling and pillars. The mirrored ceiling and entablature are features of the Zen Sect widely adopted after the Muromachi era.
