In Kenya, crocheting and knitting are typical needlework undertakings usually done listlessly by women to create dainty doilies and cheap household items such as beanies and baby shawls. However, this century-old practice appears to be staging a comeback with newer spunkier designs. FEATURE: Spring is time for needlework for many Japanese mothers

A woman and her children browse fabrics for making bags for use at schools, at a store of Yuzawaya selling handicraft materials in Tokyo's Kichijoji district on March 19, 2016. Yuzawaya offers 10 types of made-to-order fabric bags and other school-use items for children as an increasing number of mothers find it difficult to make them, required by nursery and elementary schools, by hand at home. A stand at left in the background says, "We accept orders" for goods related to children's school entrance in April. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo

FEATURE: Spring is time for needlework for many Japanese mothers

Nami Uchiyama, a 39-year-old graphic designer in Tokyo, uses a sewing machine to make a fabric bag for her son at her home on March 14, 2016, before he enters elementary school in April. Every year as cherry blossoms bloom, mothers of young children across Japan toil until late at night to sew fabric bags as many Japanese nursery and elementary schools require parents to prepare a number of items, often difficult to purchase, for use by their children at the schools. There remains social pressure for mothers to make them by hand, while fathers are generally not expected to do the needlework. (Kyodo) ==Kyodo
