OSAKA, Japan - A taxi driver with One Coin Taxi Co., an affiliate of Osaka taxi operator Shinnihonkotsu Co., holds a 500-yen coin outside his car in Osaka on July 12. The company started operation with a new service with an initial 2-kilometer charge of 500 yen amid intensifying competition in the taxi industry. The service, the lowest among major cities where a taxi ride usually costs 660 yen for the initial stage, will last for six months.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a sample of the new 500 yen coin unveiled July 28 by the Bank of Japan. The coin has been designed to end vending-machine fraud. It is almost the same in size, weight and design as the current 500 yen silver-colored coin, but has a slightly yellowish hue. Zinc has been added to change their electrical conductivity and to prevent vending machines from accepting other coins of similar weight and size.

OSAKA, Japan - A new 500 yen coin (L), which went into production on April 26, is shown next to a 500 yen coin currently in circulation. The Finance Ministry decided to issue the new coin after an increasing number of fake coins were found in vending machines across the nation. In most cases, altered South Korean 500 won coins, worth about 48 yen, were used. A 500 won coin is the same size as a 500 yen coin but weighs slightly more.
