AKITA, Japan - A nine-month-old giraffe named Taiyo, who underwent an operation to receive an artificial leg on his front right leg on May 14, looks well in his stall at Omoriyama Zoo in Akita on May 16. Doctors made a 40-centimeter-long incision in order to attach the artificial leg. The giraffe stands about 280 centimeters tall and weighs 200 kilograms.

The explosion, which is thought to have been caused by a butane gas bottle, ripped through a third floor flat in the sleeper town of Alcorcon, on the outskirts of Madrid, killing the five-year-old brother of the baby. Both the mother and the baby were discovered without heartbeat, but emergency services were able to restart their hearts. The baby was taken to the La Paz hospital in Madrid, while the mother was taken to the burns unit in the nearby Getafe hospital.
