RECAP: Hundreds Dead in Sri Lanka’s Worst Flooding in Decades

Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency after Cyclone Ditwah triggered catastrophic flooding across the country. At least 410 people have been killed and 366 remain missing. Floodwaters in Colombo peaked overnight, and while levels have begun to recede, large parts of the capital and surrounding areas remain buried in mud, with the full extent of the damage still unclear. More than 148,000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters, and the military has deployed helicopters and boats for rescue operations and aid delivery. The disaster is Sri Lanka’s worst since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Huelva Estuary in Spain

Huelva Estuary in Spain

Handout photo dated on November 16, 2025 shows Huelva Estuary in Spain. On 16 November 2025, one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites acquired this image of the Huelva estuary in south-western Spain, where the Tinto and Odiel rivers converge before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Recent rainfall has increased surface runoff and sediment transport, strengthening the contrasting outflow from the two rivers. The image shows distinct colour variations produced by differences in water chemistry and suspended materials. As these waters mix with tidal currents, they create gradual transitions and clearly defined plumes, highlighting the estuary’s dynamic behaviour. Copernicus Sentinel satellite data enables continuous monitoring of river plumes, estuarine dynamics, and land-sea interactions. This information is important for assessing the environmental impact of sediment transport, supporting water quality monitoring, and informing coastal zone management in fragile ecosystems. Newly Found Organics in Enceladus’ Plumes

Handout photo to illustrate : Newly Found Organics in Enceladus’ Plumes. NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured dramatic plumes, both large and small, spray water ice out from many locations along the famed 'tiger stripes' near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Dramatic plumes, both large and small, spray water ice out from many locations along the famed tiger stripes near the south pole of Saturn’s moon Enceladus in this image released on Feb. 23, 2010. A study published in October 2025 analyzed data from NASA’s Cassini mission and found evidence of previously undetected organic compounds in a plume of ice particles like the ones seen here. The ice particles were ejected from the ocean that lies under Enceladus’ frozen shell. Researchers spotted not only molecules they’ve found before but also new ones that lay a potential path to chemical or biochemical activity. Satellite Views of Disastrous Flooding in The Philippines

Satellite Views of Disastrous Flooding in The Philippines

Handout photo dated on November 12, 2025 shows Following the landfall of Typhoon Fung-wong on 9 November 2025, northern regions of the Philippines were affected by extensive flooding, with the Cagayan Valley among the worst hit areas. The typhoon brought intense rainfall, causing the Cagayan River to overflow its banks, submerging agricultural land, infrastructure, and urban areas, including the city of Tuguegarao. Several communities in the province of Cagayan were displaced, and damage to crops and transport infrastructure was reported across the region. This false colour image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 November 2025, shows the flooded areas along the Cagayan River. In this composite, vegetation appears in red, while water bodies and flooded areas are shown in shades of light blue and green. Additionally, sediment plumes can be seen at the river’s mouth near Aparri, where the river enters the Pacific Ocean. Photo by European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery via ABACA

Guatemala: Sailor Rescues Two Stranded Foreigners in Pacific Waters

On October 6, 2025, in waters near Guatemala, a sailor turned his vessel around during a Pacific voyage after receiving a distress signal and rushed back to save two stranded foreigners. As his vessel approached, the two men were seen struggling on a small craft adrift in the Pacific. The video showed the sailor carefully pulling them aboard and offering assistance as they regained stability and safety. He later reported that a Guatemalan military speedboat arrived to take the rescued foreigners into custody for medical checks and transport.

October 2025, the Third Warmest October on Record

Handout photo dated on 2025 shows The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has published its latest monthly Climate Bulletin, which focuses on key climate trends in October 2025. The bulletin reports that October 2025 was the third-warmest October globally, with an average surface air temperature of 15.14°C, 0.70°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month. This data visualisation, produced using C3S data, illustrates the surface air temperature anomalies across part of the Northern Hemisphere in October 2025. Warmer-than-average temperatures have been observed over much of northern and western Europe, where the average temperature was 10.19°C, 0.60°C above the average for the month. The Arctic Ocean northeast of Svalbard and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago have also been particularly affected, with surface air temperature anomalies reaching up to 8 °C above average.
