Wu Jinbiao, a youth who graduated from a technical secondary school, started an ostrich breeding cooperative with his schoolmates. Last year, over 700 ostriches were sold at the cooperative with an output value exceeding 2 million yuan (about 279,800 U.S. dollars). The business also helped more than 40 local households increase income. As China moved to advance rural revitalization, more and more young people have returned from cities to the countryside which now brims with possibilities. As the new-generation farmers or young entrepreneurs, they often brought back funds, modern farming concepts and e-commerce business models to help transform the farming landscape. The town remains nearly deserted as the government in April 2011 designated it and other municipalities within a 20-kilometer ring around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as a no-go zone. The plant's reactors suffered meltdowns after being struck by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami, spewing massive amounts of radioactive materials into the air and sea.
