Crab Farming - China

Located on the bank of the Yellow River, Xuegong Village boasts over 333.3 hectares of Yellow River tidal flats and nearly 333.3 hectares of barren ditches. In recent years, the local community has integrated these lands to develop specialized aquaculture. The Yellow River tidal flats with lush aquatic plants provide excellent conditions for crab growth. 39-year-old Li Nan returned home to start a crab farming business four years ago. Farming crabs was not easy. In the first two years of his venture, due to immature aquaculture techniques, the survival rate of the crabs in his ponds was only about 30%. Through continuous exploration, the survival rate of the crabs he farmed increased significantly. After several years of dedicated research, Li Nan has now become a well-known "crab farming expert" in the area, and his crab ponds have expanded to 33.

Every day at 6: 30 a.m., the ferry departs on time carrying farmers with baskets of farm produce to urban area to start their business. Qin Dayi, the 45-year-old captain of the ferry, has sailed on the river for over a decade. The ferry offers a journey essential to many, though it was once on the verge of vanishing. In 2016, a new expressway reduced the travel time by bus to just 50 minutes, compared to the two-hour boat journey. Most residents switched to bus travel, but many farmers still preferred the boat, which accommodated their bulky baskets and live animals. The fare is also much cheaper. Sichod Wangmo, 85, is a resident of Jiagen Village in Damxung County of Lhasa, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. In old Xizang, Sichod Wangmo was a serf. Her mother passed away when she was very young. Young Sichod Wangmo made a living with her grandma by pasturing for a serf owner. They didn't have their own cattle and sheep, but they still needed to pay various taxes which were too high for them to afford. In March 1959, people in Xizang launched the democratic reform that ended the region's feudal serfdom. Sichod Wangmo felt her life was turning on a new page since she was allocated five yaks by the government. Now, Sichod Wangmo's family has grown into a big one with four generations of over 100 members. This year, Sichod Wangmo's family members came together for a reunio
