KDDI unveils new mobile phone brand in tie-up with designers

TOKYO, Japan - A woman shows one of the new mobile phones KDDI Corp. rolled out on April 7 under its new ''iida'' brand name. The handbag-shaped handset is one of three hand-painted models designed by internationally renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, featuring patterns of her brightly colored polka dot motif. The handset is expected to hit the market this summer for over 40,000 yen.

Kobe orphans remember parents who died in 1995 Hanshin quake

KOBE, Japan - A memorial service was held at the Kobe children's home Rainbow House on Jan. 14 for orphans to remember their parents who died in the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. The magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Kobe and its vicinity on Jan. 17, 2005, leaving more than 5,000 people dead and injuring over 40,000.
