Mori unveils $4 mil. aid to S. Pacific nations

MIYAZAKI, Japan - Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori (standing), kicking off a summit with 16 South Pacific leaders in Miyazaki on April 22, unveils an aid package for Pacific island countries centering on $4 million for promoting information technology (IT) and exchange programs, and tackling infectious diseases and other global issues. ''I believe that Japan and the Pacific island countries should work together in the spirit of partnership based on mutual trust to explore the potentiality of the Pacific islanders and new areas of cooperation -- in other words our common frontiers,'' Mori said in the opening speech of the summit.
