The Yundang Lake basin covers an area of 37 square km. Once a harbor connected to the sea, it was well known for its fishing culture. In the 1970s, people reclaimed land from the sea in order to increase grain production, and Yundang became an inner lake. As the population and factories increased, water pollution grew steadily. TOKYO, Japan - A bus carrying a group of Taiwan's indigenous people is stranded near the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on June 14 after arriving there to protest the enshrinement at the shrine of their relatives who died while serving in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The Taiwanese decided not to go further to avoid confrontation with Japanese rightists because police officers told them that a group of right wingers was standing around the shrine. (Kyodo)

Judge to mull motion to quash arrest warrant without Miura presen

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands - Photo shows Japanese businessman Kazuyoshi Miura (L) shaking hands with Bruce Berline, who is serving as Miura's chief attorney on Saipan, on May 10. A judge at a Los Angeles court said May 9 he will hear arguments on a motion to quash an arrest warrant for Miura, who is accused of conspiring to have his wife murdered, without Miura being present in the courtroom. Miura, 60, was arrested on Saipan in February on charges of murder and conspiracy in connection with the 1981 shooting in Los Angeles of his wife Kazumi, then 28. Miura was charged in Japan for his wife's death and convicted of murder in 1994. But the Supreme Court overturned the verdict in 2003. (Kyodo)
