Deadly Floods Strike Troubled Bangladesh

Deadly Floods Strike Troubled Bangladesh

Rickshaw puller crossing the road in torrential rain in Dhaka,Bangladesh on 25 August 2024.As a result of continuous heavy rains, there are floods in many areas including Feni, Comilla Khagrachari in Bangladesh and have killed at least 42 people in Bangladesh and India since the start of the week, many in landslides. Floods in Bangladesh have killed at least 13 people and affected millions of others in the country’s northeast, adding to the challenges of an interim government struggling to return order to a country plunged into anarchy after mass protests forced out its autocratic leader. The regions of Feni and Cumilla were worst hit, the country’s ministry of disaster management and relief said. Communication lines have been affected, with almost all cellphone towers losing electricity. Rail service has been suspended and roads have been damaged, hampering delivery of emergency aid. Bangladesh’s army and navy have been deployed for rescue operations. Photo by Anik Rahman/Middle East Images/ABACAPRESS.COM

A jinrikisha fallen backward

The jinrikisha (person-powered vehicle) is a two-wheel cart with a puller and a customer on the seat. Said to have been invented by Izumi Yosuke, it gained popularity during the Meiji Period. American naturalist and Japanologist Edward Morse, who lived in Japan in the Meiji Period, recorded in his diary his enjoyment of a jinrikisha ride. This photograph seems to be a comic photograph taken in a studio.==Date:Middle Meiji (1883-1897), Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number50‐5‐0]

Imaichi was an important junction on the way to Nikko, where Onari (Nikko) Kaido, Riheishi Kaido and Aizu Nishi Kaido meet. These boulevards are lined with cedar trees donated by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the occasion of the 33th anniversary of the death of the Shogun Ieyasu. The rickshaw and puller in the centre of the road emphasize the size of the cedar trees.==Date:unknown, Place:Imaichi, Photo:Kusakabe Kinbei, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number2‐33‐0]
