Maiko are girls who entertain quests at a banquet by dancing. Today, the maiko of the Gion Quarter of Kyoto are famous. The maiko's sash is tied loosely and the ends left to hang. Called darari musubi, this tying method was popular in the Edo Period. The maiko of Kyoto still wear kimono in this fashion.
