Hubble Seeks Clusters in Lost Galaxy

Handout Photo shows NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image features the spiral galaxy NGC 4535, which is situated about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo (the Maiden). Through a small telescope, this galaxy appears extremely faint, giving it the nickname ‘Lost Galaxy’. With a mirror spanning nearly eight feet (2.4 meters) across and its location above Earth’s light-obscuring atmosphere, Hubble can easily observe dim galaxies like NGC 4535 and pick out features like its massive spiral arms and central bar of stars. This image features NGC 4535’s young star clusters, which dot the galaxy’s spiral arms. Glowing-pink clouds surround many of these bright-blue star groupings. These clouds, called H II (‘H-two’) regions, are a sign that the galaxy is home to especially young, hot, and massive stars that blaze with high-energy radiation. Such massive stars shake up their surroundings by heating their birth clouds with powerful stellar winds, eventually exploding as supernovae. The image incorporat

In the past few days, thousands of Airbus planes had to be grounded for a software update after it was discovered that intense solar radiation could interfere with onboard flight control computers. Around 6,000 A320 planes were thought to be affected - half the European firm's global fleet - but many were able to fly again within hours after undergoing the update. The UK's aviation regulator said there would be "some disruption and cancellations to flights" though the impact at airports appears to be limited. Airbus said it discovered the issue after an investigation into an incident in which a plane flying between the US and Mexico suddenly lost altitude in October. Photo by JMP/ABACAPRESS.COM

First images From Copernicus Sentinel-5A

First images From Copernicus Sentinel-5A

Handout photo dated October 13, 2025 shows Copernicus Sentinel-5A has delivered its first images after its launch on 13 August 2025, marking a significant milestone in the monitoring of air quality from space. The Sentinel-5 mission provides observations of key air pollutants, essential climate variables, and stratospheric ozone, which is the protective layer shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. This visualisation, created with Sentinel-5A data acquired on 13 October 2025, shows atmospheric concentrations of two trace gases: ozone (O₃) and formaldehyde (HCHO). The image on the left presents the formaldehyde vertical column density. Elevated concentrations along the northwestern coast of Angola are linked to emissions from wildfires, while increased levels over the Central African Republic stem from a combination of fire activity and biogenic emissions. The image on the right shows a global map of ozone. The hole in stratospheric ozone above Antarctica is clearly visible, with column den

FRANCE. ALPES MARITIMES (06) CANNES. ONCE IN ORBIT IN SPACE, THE SATELLITE WILL BE IN AN ATMOSPHERE-FREE ENVIRONMENT AND WILL BE SUBJECT TO THERMAL STRESSES (SPACE COLD AND SOLAR RADIATION). IN ORDER TO VERIFY THAT THE SATELLITE'S EQUIPMENT CAN FUNCTION IN THIS ENVIRONMENT, THERMAL TESTS ARE BEING CONDUCTED BY PLACING THE SATELLITE IN A THERMAL VACUUM CHAMBER. THIS CHAMBER, CALLED ESPACE 500, IS A HORIZONTAL CYLINDRICAL CHAMBER, 8 M LONG AND 7.5 M IN DIAMETER, OR APPROXIMATELY 500 M3. THIS CHAMBER CONSISTS OF AN EXTERNAL ENVELOPE AND A DOUBLE WALL COVERING THE ENTIRE INTERIOR SURFACE, ALLOWING A COLD LIQUID TO CIRCULATE TO SIMULATE THE COLD OF SPACE.
