Japan businessman makes 2nd attempt to cross Pacific on rowboat

SHINGU, Japan - Seen off by friends and supporters, Ikuo Tateo, a 66-year-old businessman, leaves Miwasaki fishing port in Shingu, Okayama Prefecture on April 21 in a fresh attempt at a solo journey across the Pacific in a rowboat. His first attempt four years ago ended when his boat was wrecked in a storm shortly after he set out from Iwate Prefecture. Tateo made a round-the-world solo trip on a yacht in 2001 without making a port call.

SHIOGAMA, Japan - A Japan Coast Guard ship brings back to Shiogama port, Miyagi Prefecture, on June 16 the 7-meter-long rowboat of Mick Dawson, a British man, after rescuing Dawson the previous day. Dawson was trying to row solo from Japan to the United States and made a distress call off Miyagi because of a broken rudder.

The two, both members of the British Royal Marines, aim to arrive in San Francisco in about 120 days with no outside support on the voyage of some 9,200 kilometers. The boat is 7.1 meters long, about 1.9 meters wide and weighs around 1.3 tons fully outfitted.
