Gov't, MMR maker to pay 155 mil. yen over vaccine side-effects

OSAKA, Japan - Hana Ueno (wheel chair), her parents and family members of two other victims of a formerly mandatory measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine enter the Osaka District Court on March 13 to hear a ruling on their suit demanding compensation from the state and the Research Foundation of Microbial Diseases of Osaka University. The court ordered the government and the institute to pay 155 million yen.

The ministry said that its efforts to eradicate measles and rubella include working to strengthen the fever and rash surveillance system within the program against diseases targeted by vaccinations, as a guarantee to discover all cases and to take necessary preventive measures to prevent the spread of infection. The ministry noted, according to a report, that its plan to make Egypt free of measles and rubella includes implementing media programs to raise awareness of the importance of routine vaccinations, and vaccination campaigns implemented by the ministry in various governorates
