Along Oura River

This is the settlement on the right bank of the Oura River around 1897. There’s a long row of large wooden western buildings. Rickshaws awaiting customers are lined up along the street with gas lights by the stone harbour walls. Small cargo vessels called sanpan that carry cargo to and from ships anchored off-shore are moored closely together. The pink western style building on the hill in the back is the Steele Memorial Academy. This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable. The Sagarimatsu area was the foreign settlement’s town center with a bar for foreigners, a restaurant, an inexpensive international hotel, and a shop selling goods for foreigners and until around 1900, the place for locals to socialize.==Date:about 1874, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma?, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

Takahoko Island

Takaboko island is viewed from Kaminoshima around 1895. This same scene can be enjoyed today from the entrance to Kaminoshima Catholic Church, although the waterfront has changed as a result of reclamation from the sea. A school called Kaminoshima-Aiji-En stands on the spot where a building is visible on the cape.
