STORY: Archaeologists uncover 14th-century synagogue in Spain DATELINE: Feb. 22, 2023 LENGTH: 0:01:20 LOCATION: Madrid CATEGORY: SOCIETY SHOTLIST: 1. various of the medieval synagogue STORYLINE: Archaeologists in the southern Spanish town of Utrera on Tuesday said they had uncovered a 14th-century synagogue, which is one of the only five medieval synagogues that survived the destruction after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. In the past seven centuries, the synagogue was converted into a church, a hospital, an orphanage, and most recently a bar. Despite objections about a lack of archaeological evidence, the Utrera city council bought the building for 460,000 euros in 2016. Researchers began an investigation of the structure in November 2021. They identified the synagogue's prayer hall and the Torah Ark area where the scriptures were kept. The city council now aims to open the site to visitors while the researchers continue to search for the synagogue's pulpit and ritual bath. Xinhua News

Father and a son on a pilgrimage

They chanted from the scriptures in front of houses in priestly vestments and begged while ringing bells hanging in front of their stomachs. The rokujurokubu carry a container with a Buddha on their backs. Three men wearing kasa and holding bells follow behind. Omizusha,a basin,at nikko toshogu shrine

From the left are Omizusha, Rinzo and the bronze torii. The water basin of the Omizusha and twelve square pillars are made of granite, and the Chinese-style barge board has carvings of cod and flying dragons. Issaikyo (complete collection of the Buddhist Scriptures) and statues of the Fudaishi father and son are stored in the Rinzo. The bronze torii was constructed by private donations from Tokugawa Hidetada. The Sorinto, Rinnoji Temple, Nikko

The Sorin tower of Rinnoji Temple in Nikko was located at Futarasan Shrine together with the Sanbutsudo, but it was moved in 1875, and the Sanbutsudo in 1881, to Rinnoji in accordance with the Buddhism and Shintoism separation order. The Sorin tower is a memorial tower with many scriptures stored in it, construction initiated by Shogun Iemitsu. This is a picture taken from the side of Gohotendo. A block of a temple

This may be the Rinzo of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu which was removed as a result of the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism. The Rinzo was located to the left of the Kagura hall, and scriptures were stored there. The Kamijinko (sacred storehouse),Toshogu Shrine,Nikko

The left corner is the Gyosuisha, and next to it is the bronze torii, Rinzo ( storage for scriptures), and the Kami Jinko (warehouse). The Kami Jinko is done in Azekura style, and the end has a statue of two elephants, one white and the other black, their rough drafts drawn by Kano Tanyu.Costumes of a procession of a thousand warriors in the spring and autumn are stored in the three Jinko (Kami, Naka and Shimo). The Sorinto, Rinnoji Temple, Nikko

The Sorin tower at Rinnoji Temple in Nikko was built with the Sanbutsudo at Nikosan Shinto Shrine, but in accordance with the Buddhism and Shintoism Separation Order, the Sorin tower was removed in 1875 and the Sanbutsudo was moved to Rinnoji in of 1881. The Sorin tower is a monument erected to play for the repose of souls, housing many scriptures and built upon orders from Shogun Iemitsu.
