Women

This looks like a dress-up competition. The women's hair is neatly groomed and decorated with pins and combs. The hairstyle of the woman on the left (front row), called seiyo-mage, became popular as a result of a movement to improve women's coiffure started in 1885. The hair is separated at the center and pulled back behind the head, where it is arranged in three knots in a circle. The prominent collar and sash belt reflect the fashions at the time.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:R. Stillfried, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number78‐73‐0]

In front of Seiyo-ken Restaurant,Ueno Park

The smaller size of the cherry trees on the right indicates that this photograph was taken some time before photographs #2425 and 2651. However, the date is later than photograph #4799 by Usui Shuzaburo because the cherry trees have grown. The sign board of the Seiyoken Annex faces in a direction different from that in photograph #4799. Insho-tei appears in a 1891stone print by Katsuyama Eizaburo, but since the cherry trees are somewhat taller in that print, this photograph was probably taken around 1887.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number64‐53‐0]

Women

Five women pose for the camera. Their hair is in shimada and seiyo-sagemaki style. The former features groomed bangs, side locks, and back hair. In the latter the hair is separated at the center of the forehead and pulled back behind the head. The garments such as the long coat, half-coat and padded kimono do not indicate any particular season. The photograph was probably taken just to show how Japanese women dressed at the time.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number49‐4‐0]
