Philippines: M5.3 Earthquake Hits Albay, Road Damage Reported

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Santo Domingo, Albay, in the Philippines on Friday, June 5, at 9:58 p.m. Road cracks and a falling rock were reported around the area, though no casualties have been announced.

NAGOYA, Japan - The shelves of venerable Japanese confectionery store Akafuku at the JR Nagoya Takashimaya Department Store are stripped of all products on Oct. 12 shortly after the government disclosed that the parent company falsified the eat-by date on some of its rice cake products, in a practice that continued for as long as 30 years. Akafuku Co., which is based in Ise, Mie Prefecture, in the vicinity of Ise Shrine, marks the 300th anniversary of its founding this year.

Torii gates on the approach to Suwa Shinto Shrine. This was the foremost Shinto shrine of the area since ancient times, and Mt. Suwa, visible to the right (east), was named after it. The shrine compound was designated as a park in 1873, and a hot spring said to have been discovered by an Englishman opened nearby. Yomei Gate is seen through Karagane Torii Gate from around Omizuya at Toshogu. The first bronze gate built in Japan, Karagane Torii was built by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. To the right is the Yomei Gate, and the left is the kamijinko (treasure storage of a shrine). The kamijinko is built in Azekura style (store house built of square logs) , inlaid with carvings of a white and black elephant based on a draft by Kano Tanyu at the end of the eaves. To the right of the steps are steel lanterns dedicated by Date Masamune, and stone garden lanterns dedicated by other lords.
