The city of Shinagawa facing the sea

The city of Shinagawa facing the sea

View of Tokyo from the northern edge of the Shinagawa Shuku (post town), where inns and rest stops for horses were located. The hill on the left indicates that this photograph was taken from around present-day Yatsuyama Bridge. The street in the foreground is probably the Tokaido Highway. This was taken by Felix Beato before train tracks were laid along the sea following land reclamation. Although Shinagawa Station was originally planned near Shinagawa Shuku, the local people were against the plan and eventually the station was built further north than originally planned. Photographs taken much later from the same angle indicate that the station was built behind the tree in the centre.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:F. A view of a village in the mountains

The Kamakura Highway (Misakaji) connecting the Kofu Basin in the south with Shizuoka is an old road dating back to ancient times. This photograph depicts the village of Fujinoki (present-day Misaka-machi, Fuefuki, Yamanashi Prefecture). Fujinoki was a tenma-shuku (a post town where travelers changed horses) on the Kofu Basin side, leading to the Misaka Pass of the Kamakura Highway. Misaka Pass is in the left background, viewed looking south from the Kofu Basin side. Nothing is known about the stone statue visible in the lower left.==Date:unknown, Place:Yamanashi, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number59‐28‐0]

Inns at Nakasendo Fukushima

A view of the village where Fukushimajuku, one of the lodging locations on the Nakasendo was located. The Kiso River flows in a zigzag in the center of the photo. There were hotels and tea houses within the Shuku, as well as the active craftsmen for Japanese cypress crafts, and lacquer ware.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagano, Photo:Kusakabe Kinbei, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number38‐17‐0]
