World's Largest Natural Ice Rink Reopens - Ottawa

Skaters head down a stairway past a gate leading to the Rideau Canal Skateway, on the morning of its opening day in Ottawa, ON, Canada on Sunday, January 21, 2024. Renowned Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's largest natural ice skating rink, opened for skating on Sunday morning for the first time in two years, the National Capital Commission (NCC) said. The 7.8-km (4.9-mile) Rideau Canal Skateway, which first opened over 50 years ago, opens new tab, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada's capital city Ottawa and is also a top attraction for skating enthusiasts seeking outdoor thrills during Canada's usually biting cold winters. The canal did not open to skating last season in early 2023 for the first time due to a lack of ice, NCC, which maintains and operates the skateway, said at the time, blaming the closure on a mild winter caused by climate change. Kiyomizudera Temple,Kyoto

The Nio Gate of Kiyomizu Temple. There are stone lanterns on both the north and the south sides of the stone stairway in front of the gate. The west gate and the three-story pagoda are visible on the far right. Built during the Muromachi Era (1392-1573), the Nio Gate had three rooms and one door with a hiwadabuki (bark-covered) roof. The statue of Kongo Rikishi is situated in the area surrounded by a kongo fence (a fence made of vertical stakes with decoratively shaped finials resembling the ritual object called kongosho used in esoteric Buddhist rites) with lattice work above it. Today, statues of guardian dogs stand in front of the stone lanterns bearing the inscription Kiyomizu Temple. Taken by Felix Beato.==Date:unknown, Place:Kyoto, Photo:F.
