Owakudani is the place where Chuo-Shinzan of Hakone Volcano erupted. A considerable amount of hydrogen sulfide gas is emitted. Thus, normal plants cannot survive. This photo depicts the rough rocky valley. The person in the lower right shows the vastness of the area. At present, this scene can be observed from the Hakone ropeway.==Date:unknown, Place:Hakone, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number59‐66‐0]

Large Kuroko-type sulfide deposit found off Japan

One of the world's largest Kuroko-type sulfide deposits has been discovered on the floor of a caldera about 1,400 meters under the sea 400 kilometers south of Tokyo, the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology's Geological Survey announced Feb. 11. More than one hundred chimney-like structures made of chilled and settled minerals were observed within a radius of 400 meters. The agency released photos of the ''Sunrise Deposit'' taken by the research subversible Shinkai 2000. ==Kyodo
