This is a Felice Beato photograph taken somewhere between Hodogaya and Fujisawa, possibly near the post town of Totsuka famous for its pine trees. The shop signs read Issen-meshi (One Sen Food) and Ochazuke (Rice with Green Tea). The bank of Katsura River, which separated the feudal domains of Sagami and Kai along the old Koshu Highway (present-day Uenohara-machi in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture), seen from the east side (Sagami side) of the river. The buildings are teahouses standing along the highway, the existence of which is reported in travel journals as early as the Tenpo Period (1830-44). The mountain station Suwa-no-Sekisho (Kuchidome Bansho) is up the slope on the right. Mt. In late 1864, responding to the Namamugi Incident, the Tokugawa Shogunate opened a new road from Negishi to Honmoku southeast of Yokohama to keep foreigners away from the Tokaido Highway. There were teahouses for foreigners along the road. The approach to Nishi-Otani Temple is viewed from the western edge of Entsu Bridge, facing east. There are two giant pine trees by the sanmon gate in the back. This stone bridge was built in 1865. It was referred to as a spectacles bridge because of its shape. It was famous for its red and white lotus flowers in the mid-19th century. This is a byobu torii gate located at a crossing at present-day National route 1 after going down Gongen Slope after going up the Old Hakone Highway from the post town of Hata. This is a scenic point where Lake Ashinoko and the village of Moto-Hakone can be seen as well as the traffic hub. There seemed to have been teahouses and there are many photos taken at this location.
