At one point, the volume of sea urchins gathered by a local fishermen's cooperative in Fukui dropped to 19 kilograms, compared with an annual average of 300 kg before the spill, fishermen say.

Sea waves in coastal areas reached up to three meters, prompting fishermen to take advantage of the stormy weather to catch their daily fish. SOUNDBITE (Arabic): AHMAD MALLI, Fisherman "The weather is stormy, there is a lot of rain, the sea waves are strong, so the weather is suitable for fishing. Fish land at the shore due to the strong waves, which makes it easier for us to catch them." Accompanied by strong winds and rain, the snowstorm shut down roads in parts of Lebanon, prompting the government to use bulldozers to remove snow from the main roads. FUKUI, Japan - A diver is all smiles with a bagful of sea urchins she gathered after three hours of work on Aug. 6, the last day of the urchin-gathering season off the coast of Fukui Prefecture. Fishermen in the area say the volume of sea urchins caught off the Fukui coast have more or less returned to normal 10 years after the Russian oil tanker Nakhodka carrying 20,000 kiloliters of fuel oil broke up in stormy weather in the Sea of Japan and up to 6,200 kiloliters of oil washed up in the coasts of 10 prefectures. At one point, the volume of sea urchins gathered by a local fishermen's cooperative in Fukui dropped to 19 kilograms, compared with an annual average of 300 kg before the spill, fishermen say. AOMORI, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard on April 7 recovered a body from a sunken scallop fishing boat in Mutsu Bay off Aomori Prefecture and another three bodies from the seabed around the vessel. Relatives (two in center) of still missing fishermen are told by a rescuer (L, bottom) that three bodies had been found. Eight crew members aboard the 5.1-ton Nikko Maru went missing on April 5. JERUSALEM, Israel - A court in Haifa, Israel, sentenced Pilastro Zdravko, the Montenegrin second officer of the Israeli container ship Jim Asia, to two and a half years in prison, suspended for three years, on Nov. 12 for causing through negligence the deaths of seven Japanese fishermen in a collision last year with the Japanese fishing boat Shinsei Maru No. 3 off Nemuro in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
