KYOTO, Japan - ''Maiko'' apprentice geisha hold copies of the Michelin guide for Kyoto and Osaka at Kenninji Temple in Kyoto on Oct. 13, 2009. In the guide, which will hit the stands Oct. 16, Michelin has awarded its top three-star rating to six restaurants in Kyoto and one in Osaka.

A teahouse and girls,Mukojima

The English title is Wayside Resting Place. This is probably the endai bench at a teahouse on the Mukojima embankment. The kimono style of the three dressed-up girls indicates that they are geigi (young geisha). The food on the bench appears to be manju sweet buns. The woman is practicing songs and accompanying herself on a shamisen (three-stringed lute). The hair style with tortoiseshell hairpins and the look of her kimono collar suggest that she is a geisha (entertainer). The woman in the center holds the hem of kimono with her left hand, so she is probably a geisha.
