Nagoya students break world record for '3-legged race'

NAGOYA, Japan - A total of 2,026 people comprising Nagoya Otani Senior High School students, their parents and teachers moves step by step, their feet tied with ribbons, at a stadium in Nagoya's Showa Ward on June 13. They broke the previous world record of 1,719 people for a ''three-legged race.''

Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi speaks at a dinner reception hosted by six local groups including, the Japan-America Society, at a hotel in Los Angeles on April 29. In the speech, Obuchi said Japan and the United States must cooperate closely, as if they are in a ''three-legged race,'' to bring peace and prosperity to the Asia-Pacific region. The visit to Los Angeles was Obuchi's first stop on his weeklong tour of the United States.

The Okusha, or tomb of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined in the back of the Homoto Hall of Toshogu. Within the stone walls leading from the Inuki Gate is the bronze Hoto on top of the eight-coloured and five-storied stone. There are candle stands in front in the shape of a crane and turtle, with an incense burner and three-legged flower vase. To the right and left of the main hall are dragons climbing up and down the water. The Mitsugusoku (three-legged figurines) were dedicated by the Marquis Maeda Toshitsune, brother-in-law of the Shogun.The door to the main hall is closed.
