Kobe, vicinity mark 15th anniversary of Great Hanshin Earthquake

KOBE, Japan - People offer silent prayers near a clock, which has been stopped since the Great Hanshin Earthquake hit Kobe and its vicinities in 1995, at a shopping street in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, on Jan. 17, 2010, as Kobe and its neighboring cities mark the 15th anniversary of the quake that took the lives of 6,434.

Pop group SPEED reunited for charity concert

AWAJI, Japan - The teenage Okinawan pop group SPEED, which had dissolved last March, was reunited for a day on Awaji Island on Oct. 6 to stage a charity concert for victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States and the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake that devastated the western Japan city of Kobe and its vicinities. The members are Eriko Imai, 18, Takako Uehara, 18, Hitoe Arakaki, 20, and Hiroko Shimabukuro, 17.

Japan land prices rebound after marking 1st fall in 6 yrs

The average price of land in Japan rebounded on the back of solid housing demand after falling for the first time in six years the previous year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the government said Tuesday. Land in all categories nationwide, including that for residential and commercial use, rose 0.6 percent from a year earlier as of Jan. 1, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The ministry said a recovery trend has been observed, driven by housing demand in urban areas and vicinities, as the influence of the pandemic is waning.
