Ecosystem of Mt. Fuji threatened by alien plants

KOFU, Japan - Volunteers and members of the Fujisan Club work to get rid of bur cucumbers, designated as an invasive alien species, on Aug. 17, 2013 along Lake Kawaguchi in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, with a view of Mt. Fuji (back). The nonprofit organization is engaged in a series of campaigns to exterminate the species to protect domestic species and the local environment.

Shiojiri range is also called Shiomine, and has a height of 1000 m. It has a view of the surrounding villages and Lake Suwa below, and to the distant left is Yatsugatake and Kirigamine. On a clear day, Mt. Sunset glow in lake ashinoko

A view to the west from Mishimacho of Hakonejuku. Although not clear in this picture, it is a scenic spot where Mt. Fuji can be seen in the distance. Lake Ashino belonged to Hakone Shrine, and was called the water for washing hands of Hakone Gongen. A sand delta developed on the north bank of Suruga Bay with the sand carried by the Fuji River and Kano River. A lagoon was formed, and further sand accumulation created the peculiar Ukishimagahara. The boat in the photo is a flat bottom river boat. Kashiwabara is located on the left bank of the mouth of Katsumata River, which pours into Suruga Bay. This may be the low wetlands near the mouth of the river. A sailing boat can be seen to the left and Mt. Fuji in the centre. The cameraman may have taken the photo from a boat. In the Morse Collection at the Salem Peabody Museum, there is a photo which is believed to be developed from the same negative as this photo.
