13-year-old Osaka girl wins int'l violin contest

OSAKA, Japan - Misa Yan, a 13-year-old girl from Osaka, has won the junior section, for children aged 16 or under, of an international contest for young violinists held in Folkestone, England, officials in contact with the contest organizers said April 23. The contest was created in 1983 by violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who died in 1999. This year's contest was held until April 22.

TOKYO, Japan - Photo taken Feb. 21, 2012, in Tokyo shows Muneyuki Nakazawa, a violin maker known globally for restoration and appraisal of Stradivarius and other rare instruments, making a violin from wooden debris from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami found in the city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. A project is under way to have 1,000 violinists from around the world play at various venues in Japan and abroad with violins made from such debris, with the first performance to be given by Ivry Gitlis, an Israeli-born violinist, at a first-anniversary ceremony in Rikuzentakata on March 11.
