TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Tower launches an annual "Milky Way illumination" event at the observatory 150 meters above ground on June 1, 2012, in which 24,000 LED bulbs mimic the Milky Way. As visitors enjoyed a combination of a night view of the Japanese capital and the illumination's reflection on the windowpane, a Tokyo Tower official said, "You don't get to see this Milky Way from Skytree," referring to Tokyo Skytree, the landmark tower that recently opened, creating a rivalry with Tokyo Tower.

JR West starts probing bullet train window crack

FUKUOKA, Japan - West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) begins investigating on the afternoon of Jan. 9 in Fukuoka the cause of a crack found Jan. 8 in the windowpane in front of the driver's seat in a bullet train. The 1-meter-long vertical crack was found in the left half of the windowscreen, which appeared to have been hit by an unknown object.
