The Oura foreign settlement and Nagasaki Harbour seen from Don-no-Yama

Since the dormitory for foreign workers built in April 1874 on the hill to the right of the Nagasaki Shipyard shows in this photo, the photo was taken after April 1874. The photo shows typhoon damage including the damage sustained by the buildings on the left bank of the Oura River where the river narrows. ‘The Carmody Album’ brought overseas contains a photo which shows buildings under construction at this exact point. Therefore, this photo is presumed to have been taken right after the typhoon hit in August 1874.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

A bit upstream stands Benten Bridge built during the Bunkyu period (1861-1864) when the land was reclaimed for the Oura settlement. The U-shaped building visible next to Myogyoji Temple on the left hill is the Belle Vue Hotel. On the other side of the port is the Nagasaki Shipyard controlled by the Ministry of Engineering.
